It took until evening, but I finished moving in my belongings and managed to set up an environment where I can live while working.
“Everyone did a great job. The village chief will pay the daily wages, so please collect them.”
When I announced that, cheers erupted from the villagers who had helped carry in the luggage. Then Klaus called out to me.
“Lord Allen, you have received an invitation to a dinner party from the village chief.”
“Oh, I see.”
I was led by Klaus and the others towards the village chief’s house.
Though it’s called the village chief’s house, unlike the Western-style mansion I forged or the buildings in Wishen, it’s wooden. Still, unlike the other villagers’ homes, it’s quite large.
To give you an idea of its size, the front side is about as wide as the long side of a tennis court. And while the villagers’ homes are small, single-story houses, the village chief’s house is two stories tall and even has a tower that seems to be for lookout purposes.
Incidentally, the village chief’s house isn’t large because he’s extravagant. It also serves as the village office, and in emergencies like monster attacks, it functions as a shelter for the villagers.
Anyway, putting that aside, we arrived at the village chief’s house. Outside the building, the village chief, Hans, came out to greet us.
“Hero-sama, welcome back. Everything is ready.”
“Oh, thank you.”
“Please, come this way.”
Led by Hans, I entered the building. Passing through the entrance, I walked down the hallway and was guided to a room at the far end. There was a long table with seats arranged around it.
“Allen von Ramslett-sama has arrived!”
When the village chief called out, the seated participants all stood up at once and bowed to me.
At a glance, it seemed most of the seats were filled. Apparently, the other participants had already arrived.
“Please, have a seat over here.”
“Ok”
I was urged to sit in the so-called birthday seat, with Hans sitting to my left and Klaus to my right. Soon after, glasses of wine were brought in.
“Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to propose a toast to His Excellency Allen von Ramslett, the hero who saved our Kingdom of Ramslett and husband to Her Royal Highness Princess Anastasia.”
Huh? Oh, I see. I hadn’t heard about that, but given your position, that kind of responsibility would naturally fall to you.
I hold the glass in my hand and stand up.
“Everyone, thank you for coming. I’m Allen von Ramslett.”
Saying this, I looked around at the participants.
I see. It seems the villagers are participating to some extent as well.
“As you may have heard, we are planning to exterminate monsters in the nearby forest and open up roads. Adventurers and merchants will come, and Weissenhafen will surely become prosperous.”
The villagers listen to my words with hopeful expressions. Still, I don’t think it’s right to make a long speech, so let’s get this toast started.
“Well then, here’s to the future of Weissenhafen!”
“””cheers”””
When I said that and raised my glass, the participants all raised their glasses at once.
I pretended to take a sip and sat down. Hans spotted it immediately and called out to me with a worried look.
“Oh? Hero-sama, did you not find our wine to your liking?”
“No, I don’t really drink much.”
“Goodness me….!”
As Hans said this, his expression became a little disappointed.
“I’m sorry, even though you went to all that trouble.”
“No… I apologise for not having looked into it properly.”
“No, it doesn’t matter. That sort of information wouldn’t have been passed on in the first place, anyway.”
“My apologies.”
Hans seemed thoroughly mortified, but quickly changed the subject.
“By the way, Hero-sama, this is my daughter, whose name is Leia.”
Saying that, he introduced the young woman in a maid’s uniform standing behind Hans.
“Ah, I see.”
“What do you think? Though I may be biased as her parent, Leia is quite lovely, and she’s reputed to be the most beautiful girl in the village…”
“Eh? Ah, ah. Well, yes. She’s a pretty girl, isn’t she?”
I have Anna, so I’m not interested at all, but I didn’t want to embarrass her in front of everyone, so I just flattered her.
“Yes! That’s right! She’s my proud daughter!”
“I, I see…”
Feeling rather pleased with himself, Hans began boasting about his daughter. The girl doesn’t seem to mind either, as she blushes slightly.
“Hero-sama, would you like some fruit water?”
“Ah, please”
“Understood, Leia. Go and bring it.”
“Yes, Father”
After saying that, the girl bowed to me and left.
