Epilogue – 20: Former Villager A Prepare to exterminate the monsters:-

Welcome folks,
–Aninsar

I left the work in Wishen to Anna and have now arrived in Weissenhafen. The advance party had already arrived and made the necessary preparations beforehand, so I was able to meet the village chief smoothly.

“Welcome, hero-sama. I am Hans, the village chief.”

The village chief, who introduced himself, had deep wrinkles on his face and appeared to be quite elderly. He was also quite thin and sunburned, making it clear at a glance that life in this village was not particularly affluent.

“It’s Allen. Nice to meet you.”

I shook hands with the village chief. His hands were rough, conveying that even at this age, he likely still worked the fields.

“Must have been busy? My apologies.”
“No, no. My lord….. that wasn’t it. I’m very grateful that the king is sending adventurers to exterminate the monsters.”

Even so, the village chief’s expression remained gloomy.

“What’s wrong? Are you worried about something?”
“…..Well, I’m embarrassed to admit it, but the truth is, I don’t have much savings…..”
“Don’t worry about food. We’ll bring in the wheat, and any surplus from the monster meat we hunt will be shared with the villagers.”
“…..but as for the amount I can afford to pay…..”
“Think of it as a substitute for lodging fees. You don’t have to worry about money this time.”

The village chief then looked relieved.

“Village chief, what’s going on? Could it be that they asked for money?”

As I said this, I glanced at the other officers from the advance party who were also present. The village chief looked at them with an awkward expression on his face, then quickly looked away apologetically.

“Klaus, what’s going on? Didn’t I tell you the kingdom would cover the costs this time?”
“Yes, I have told the village chief that as well. Right?”
“Y-Yes…..”
“So then, what was that about earlier?”
“Well…..”

Klaus looks like he’s deep in thought.

“Oh, perhaps”
“What?
“The amount of food aid initially proposed by the village chief, calculated based on population, was enough for six months. However, Hero-dono’s plan was for three months. Therefore, I informed them that they would need to pay the actual cost for any amount exceeding three months. Anything beyond three months would essentially become this village’s reserve stock.”
“…..Village Chief?”
“Th-That’s…..well…”
“Oh, and then…..”
“There’s more?”
“No, it’s more of an assumption, but he probably never heard of monster meat before. So perhaps he mistakenly thought it wasn’t included in the three months’ worth of food aid.”
“…..What do you think, Village Chief?”
“Y-yes, that’s right.”

The village chief agreed with Klaus, but it was clear that he had taken advantage of the opportunity to lie and cover up the situation.

Oh well. Can’t be helped.

I don’t want to let corruption run rampant… but for now, it’s only attempted. Exterminating monsters takes priority, so I’ll pretend I didn’t see it for the time being.

“I see. In that case, you needn’t worry. As I mentioned earlier, any leftover meat from the monsters the adventurers exterminate will be distributed to the villagers free of charge.”
“Yes, thank you very much.”

After that, I continued to talk with the village chief and gather information about the area surrounding the village.

◆◇◆

After leaving the village chief’s house, I was guided by Klaus and the others to a vacant lot slightly outside the village. There, piles of lumber, stones, and numerous other building materials were stacked high. Nearby, villagers had gathered to help carry the loads, and even a large group of children had assembled.

The children are probably just curious onlookers.

Come to think of it, when I went to Yersdorf, the village kids kept pestering me to show them magic.

“Well, let’s do it”

I draw the magic circle I prepared on the ground to surround the building materials.

“What?”
“What is he doing?”
“I don’t know…..”
“Is this magic!?”
“Eh!? Magic!?”
“Can that guy use magic!?”
“Amazing!”
“That’s nice”

The children who had been listening to the adults’ conversation reacted to the word ‘magic’ and looked at us with sparkling eyes.

Ah, it was like this back then, too. How nostalgic.

However, there’s no time to be sentimental. Let’s get this done.

“Alchemy!”

The magic circle emitted a dazzling light, and in an instant, a stone Western-style mansion materialised.

“Ohhh…..”
“This is the hero’s…..”
“Awesome~”
“What’s that!?”
“Magic can create houses!”
“Wow, amazing!”
“Big bro! More――”
“Hey! That person is a noble! Don’t be so disrespectful!”

The adults around me frantically stopped the children who were trying to run toward me.

Ah, that’s right. My position has changed, too.

It’s lonely, but I can’t act like I did back then.

“Alright, let’s start moving things in. Everyone, get to work.”

“””Yes!”””

At my command, the adults from the village began to carry in furniture one after another.
